Wow...have been gone for a while. I'm glad to see this tribe is still alive!

So every so often I pop this question, and I'm trying again just in case. Has anyone ever heard of or read these awesome German kids books that have as their main character a being called Kasperle who looks like a joker? They are some of the best memories I have of reading when I was a kid. I read my cousin's series and she's lost it since then. I would so love to get my hands on those books again.....

    is it Hort Zu! ?

we have a puppet of Kasper (looking very Punch & Judy) from the old country along with other characters, including a wizard, maid, death, devil, and "indian" chief.

my Deutsch papa read to me those strange, iconic children's books Struwelpeter and Max und Moritz...i'll ask him about Kasperle...

Hmm...I think I discovered that the author of the books I read was Josephine Siebe. I'm not positive, but I think so. But now I see that the character is based on a popular character! This particular author must have adapted the character for her novels.... I have found a copy of one of the books in Spanish in a Spanish internet bookstore. I am asking a friend to buy it and then I will be able to tell if it is the right one! I am so excited someone has even heard of Kasperle! Thank you.

checked with my dad. here's what he came up with...

The google translation was very close. Here is what I got:

An old woodcarver named Friedolin finds an alive Kasper puppet in a cupboard. (Must have been Giupetto! Did Pinoccio come from these tales?)
The puppet gets bored living with the old man and decides to see the world. He arrives in a small town where he meets and makes many friends. While helping one of his friends reconnect with his one true love, he comes in contact with the moody/witty Duke August Erasmus of Mt. Heavenhigh. He travels to Switzerland and Kasperland where he meets many people just like him. He leaves there and returns. ( It is not clear where he returns to.) In the last volume of the series "Kasperle Games and Pranks", the author has included a number of scripted puppet plays that can be performed.

The author Josephine Siebe seems to be avery famous and prolific author of childrens books. There are many of her childrens books available in german, dutch and other translations. I don't know which language you correspondent read them in but I am certain she will find what she is looking for.
I ran a Google search on her name and came up with lots of sites selling her stuff. Especially german ones.

        Here is one site,
        Shortcut to: dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet...hResults

        Another site:
        Shortcut to: www.zvab.com/offers/siebe-josephine.html

        hope this helps!

I have myself three of those Kasperle books written by Josephine Siebe. They are Spanish translations by Editorial Noguer (1960). My books are still in pretty good shape, I got them as a Christmas gift when I was 7 years old. They are among the stories from my childhood I cherish most. I'm 45 now and not ashamed to say that I still reread them with pleasure every few years.
