it doesn't even have to be "kids" music, in fact preferably not. i teach yoga to kids 3 and up. and i want boppy authentic joyful danceable singable music that doesn't talk down.

there does seem to be some good children's music out there, but most of it seems so drippy and musically anemic. the putumayo "playground" series seems pretty good. but what non-children's genre music do you like for the younger people?

any ideas & recommendations appreciated...

is there a better tribe for this post?

I really liked Jim Valley when I was a kid. He actually came to my school and each class *wrote* their own song and then presented them at an assembly in which we sang ours plus his classics.

As a kid, I just loved (the old) U2 and Kate Bush, especially Kate Bush because she had these beautiful songs with a clear storyline, like 'cloud busting', and nice video clips... Just loved that! I was an 'eighties' kid, I loved Madonna (achem...), Michael Jackson's 'Bad' and songs like 'Sail Away' by Orinoco Flow (I think children would still enjoy that one, you can really move on it like a... well like your flying or sailing, I always used to dance on it as a kid).
I also loved ehm... Spandau Ballet's 'Gold' ('Gold, always believe in your soul, you've got the power to know you're indestructible, always believe in... you are gold...' sigh... Duran Duran and more of those eighties groups.
Also, we used to have dance/dramatic expression in elementary school, and our teacher used all kinds of synthesizer and pink floyd songs. Those songs seemed strange and very magical to me, as if they were from another planet... And the we would move on them... Just loved it.

Well, perhaps some of that music is a little outdated, however I do have an 'eighties' recommendation: songs by David Bowie, for the movie Labyrinth by Jim Henson, creator of Sesame Street and the Muppet Show amongst others (movie was a hit in the eighties and is still popular today, loved by children and grown ups alike).
These are really fun songs about magic etc., and trolls sings the choruslines... It's fun! when you hear the music, it makes you wanna dance and sing along. Just Google it up or look at Amazon.com. Would highly recommend it, I think they are still very powerful and enjoyable, even twenty years later.

Just this weekend I was in a teachers' store, and they were playing "Swing Around the World," put out by Putumayo. I absolutely loved it. Also, though I haven't heard these, Putumayo has some "kids" cds which I would expect to be great.

Where are you located? Ever hear of Mothersong & Joya Winwood, beautiful mama/papa sung earth/love/compassion centered music...so healing for all of us! I am in Santa Cruz, I know that you can purchase these Cd's from a spiritual bookstore here called Gateways, try calling them. Also, I adore Bob Reid & ZunZun, we are ultra blessed here to have so much amazing kids music. I think as a yoga mama you will be thrilled at Mothersong:)
    Blessings, Azalyne
